IT'S one of the region's biggest tourist attractions, and we could lose it to erosion and introduced plants.

To stop that from happening, Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) have been scouring the dunes at Stockton to exterminate introduced species that force out native plants and animals.

"The Stockton Dune Care group has actually been doing a lot of work to remove a lot of the bitou bush already," CVA volunteer engagement officer Rachelle McConville said.

"The work that we've been doing has been . . . follow-up weeding to make sure that it doesn't come back."

Phil Shearman, leader of a CVA team that includes overseas visitors, says clearing bitou bush and other introduced weeds will help bring native plants, insects and animals into the area.

Mr Shearman says he was surprised at the state of the dunes after the holiday period. "It's not that trashed, it's actually held up really, really well," he said.
